Inside Tips On How To Get On David Letterman’s The Late Show’s “Stupid Pet Tricks”! [ Bus1nessN3wz ]

Stupid Pet Tricks are an institution on David Letterman's The Late Show on CBS. Letterman has been doing this segment for 20 years, and the key to get on the show is to have a dog or cat who does "something we've never seen before!" says Brian Teta, the Stupid Pet Tricks Coordinator. "But with this criteria, finding that new pet trick becomes more challenging each year," he adds.

To find the new star of the segment, Brian Teta, has an email account where pet owners can write to describe this special trick their pet can perform. He also holds 25 to 30 live Stupid Pet Tricks auditions per year around the country. Once, he even auditioned dogs right there at the stadium when the Major League Baseball parks held "Dog Days" events.

Your pet's trick needs to be something surprising, unusual, or amazing!

When asked again what the Late Show is exactly looking for, Teta told us: "Given the unexpectedness of my other segments and my own humor, your pet's trick needs to be something surprising, unusual, or amazing." The trick doesn't necessarily have to be stupid though, it should even be rather smart. What works best is a basic dog trick, but taken to the next level. "Any dog can fetch, but if your dog can fetch a tissue when you sneeze, then you might be worthy of Stupid Pet Tricks," explains Teta.

Cats are less present than dogs on the show, probably they are a lot more difficult to train than dogs,. Only Grumble landed the segment in 1994 for his ability to say "yum yum" while eating. However felines are encouraged to audition and they actually have a better shot at getting on the show according to Teta. "Cat tricks are far more unusual than dog tricks," he says, "if a cat were to catch a ball in her mouth, for example, she may be considered for Stupid Pet Tricks!"

Every four to five months, Teta takes his ten favorite videos to Letterman's executive producers and three to four pets are selected. They are then flown to New York and have one rehearsal before the actual taping. "David Letterman doesn't meet the parents or their pets to keep thing spontaneous," Teta tells us. "He doesn't even know the trick, until the moment the pet steps out on stage!"

Most of the pets who appear on this segment don't launch into a show biz career but Buddy, a Golden Retriever who shot hoops on the show, got a role in the film Air Bud. And Odie, the Pug who can swoon, "I love you" became an Internet superstar. On the other hand, some pets are already renowned before they get on Stupid Pet Tricks. Jesse, the most well trained Jack Russell of all time, had already a tremendous amount of views on YouTube when he appeared on the late show set!

"The best way to audition is to email us a description of your pet's trick at lateshowtricks@cbs.com," says Teta. "If we like it and it's interesting enough, you will be asked to send a video of the trick."

High cure rates seen with Merck oral hepatitis drugs: study [ Bus1nessN3wz ]

(Reuters) – A combination of two oral hepatitis C treatments developed by Merck & Co led to high cure rates in previously untreated patients, indicating the company is a contender in the race to find new treatments for the liver destroying virus.

The treatments tested with and without the older drug ribavirin led to cure rates of 96 percent to 100 percent, according to interim data from a small midstage clinical trial.

The results appear to confirm Merck will be competitive in the crowded race to develop interferon-free treatments for hepatitis C, assuming they are repeated in larger studies that include more difficult to treat patient populations, such as those not helped by prior therapy.

The 65-patient, 3-arm study tested MK-5172, a protease inhibitor, combined with MK-8742 from a highly promising new class of drugs called NS5A inhibitors for 12 weeks of treatment.

Based on data available at the time the interim results were released, 55 of 56 patients who completed the therapy were considered to be cured of the virus which is transmitted through infected blood from sources such as infected hypodermic needles or blood transfusions.

Patients who have no detectable levels of the virus in their blood 12 weeks after completing 12 weeks of treatment were deemed to be cured – a measure known as SVR 12, for sustained virologic response.

In the arm of the study that did not include the older oral medicine ribavirin, all 11 patients who completed therapy with MK-5172 and the higher 50 milligram dose of MK-8742 taken once a day achieved SVR 12.

All 12 patients who began that arm of the study had Genotype 1b of the liver disease, which is prevalent in Europe and Japan. It is considered somewhat easier to treat than Genotype 1a, the most common form of the virus seen in the United States, which may require a third drug in the regimen to achieve similarly high cure rates.

The other two arms – one testing 50 mg of MK-8742 and one using 20 mg – did include ribavirin given twice a day.

With the lower dose of the NS5A inhibitor, all 21 patients who completed therapy were deemed cured. In the group that received the higher dose in the three-drug combination, 23 of 24, or 96 percent, reached SVR 12. About three quarters of the patients in those arms were Genotype 1a.

Of the 65 patients in the study, only one had experienced a relapse of the virus, according to the data to be presented on Sunday at the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) meeting in Washington.

“We are encouraged by these preliminary data for the combination of MK-5172 and MK-8742. It’s a one-two punch with both arms equally strong,” said Eliav Barr, head of infectious diseases for Merck.

SHORTER TREATMENT DURATION

Current standard treatment regimens for hepatitis C take 24 or 48 weeks and includes injected interferon, which causes miserable flu-like symptoms that lead many patients to avoid or discontinue treatment.

Several companies are developing new all-oral combinations that in clinical trials have cut treatment duration to 12 weeks for many patients while significantly increasing cure rates from about 75 percent with current drugs.

Ultimately, physicians would like to also see regimens that do not require ribavirin, which has its own side effect issues, including anemia and rash.

It is believed that tens of thousands of hepatitis C patients have delayed treatment while awaiting the new drugs expected to start reaching the market next year.

Gilead Sciences is widely seen as being in the lead with a safe and effective all-oral combination, with Bristol-Myers-Squibb and AbbVie close behind.

Gilead last week won an approval recommendation from a U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisory panel for its highly regarded sofosbuvir.

Some analysts believe the market for all-oral hepatitis C treatments could reach $ 20 billion as many more people get tested for the virus, given the very high cure rates, shorter treatment durations and tolerable side effects.

An estimated 170 million people worldwide are infected with hepatitis C, which if left untreated can lead to cirrhosis, need for a transplant or liver cancer.

The Merck drugs were well tolerated with no serious adverse side effects reported. The most common side effects were fatigue, headache and nausea.

Merck plans to expand the Phase II trial to about 400 additional patients, testing its drugs with and without ribavirin, and including those also infected with the HIV virus, those with cirrhosis and patients who have failed to be cured by prior treatments. It is also looking at a regimen of only 8 weeks in previously untreated patients that would include ribavirin.

China to end use of prisoners’ organs for transplants in mid-2014 [ Bus1nessN3wz ]

HANGZHOU, China (Reuters) – China, the only country that still systematically takes organs from executed prisoners for use in transplant operations, plans to end the controversial practice by the middle of next year, a senior official said on Saturday.

By mid-2014, all hospitals licensed for organ transplants will be required to stop using organs from executed prisoners and only use those voluntarily donated and allocated through a fledging national system, said Huang Jiefu, a former deputy health minister who heads the organ transplant reform.

The supply of human organs falls far short of demand in China due in part to a traditional belief that bodies should be buried or cremated intact. An estimated 300,000 patients are wait-listed every year for organ transplants, and only about one in 30 ultimately receives a transplant.

That shortage has driven a trade in illegal organ trafficking, and in 2007 the government banned transplants from living donors, except spouses, blood relatives and step- or adopted family members.

Huang, an Australian-trained transplant surgeon, admitted the problem of an organ black market was not something China would be able to easily resolve.

“The illegal trade of human organs will be inevitable in Chinese society in the years to come. The huge demand for organs is one of the causes. As long as there’s a gap between supply and demand, illegal organ trafficking won’t disappear, but the government will continue to crack down on it,” he told Reuters.

INTERNATIONAL CRITICISM

Beijing said in August it would begin to phase out the practice of using executed prisoners’ organs this month. Huang did not give an exact date for a ban on their use.

“Using executed prisoners’ organs for transplants does not meet with the ethical standards universally accepted, and has always received criticism from the international community,” Huang told a meeting of health and hospital officials in the eastern city of Hangzhou. “China’s organ transplant reform is the government’s political commitment to the people, and the world.”

“There has never been a law that regulates the use of prisoners’ organs. Enforcement of the policy has many loopholes, and there have been a lot of scandals that tarnish the image of the Chinese government,” Huang said.

Courts, which oversee executions, have been told they are no longer allowed to offer organs to hospitals, Huang later told Reuters, noting a trend in China anyway for fewer executions. “China has meted out fewer and fewer death sentences, so reliance on death-row inmates’ donations will become a dead end. So we must rely on voluntary donations,” he said.

China does not publish the numbers of people it executes, though the World Coalition Against The Death Penalty estimates it was about 4,000 last year.

VOLUNTEER PROGRAMMES

To cut back on its dependency on prisoners’ organs, China has launched pilot volunteer organ donor programs in 25 provinces and municipalities since February, with the aim of creating a nationwide voluntary scheme by the end of this year.

The number of transplants using donated organs has jumped to more than 900 cases in the first seven months of this year from 245 in 2011, but is still less than half the number of organs from death-row inmates, according to data provided by Huang.

Rights groups say many organs are taken from prisoners without their consent or their family’s knowledge, something the government denies.

A decrease in organ supply will also put more pressure on China’s nascent donation system.

A transplant surgeon at Saturday’s meeting from the nearby city of Nanjing, who asked to be identified by his last name, Li, said it was likely the new rules would limit the number of transplants they were able to carry out.

“There might be a temporary shortage of organs. If so, we will just have to do fewer transplants. There’s nothing we can do about that. Other countries haven’t solved that problem either,” he said.

What a gorgeous thing this is. We’re sharing it, but I’ve stopped being polite and am shamefully grabbing as much as I can. There’s crunch from shards of fried puri and wisps of sev, sweetness from date, tamarind and jewels of pomegranate, the odd strident nip of coriander. A different kind of texture comes from mealy black chickpeas and the whole thing is held together by the soothing balm of yoghurt. It’s papri (or papdi or papadi) chaat, a popular Indian street food snack; I’ve had it many times before, but I can’t remember ever feeling like fighting over it.

It’s typical of the food at this tiny East End restaurant run by Urvesh Parvais with his mother, Lalita Patel: all vivacity and freshness. They started out selling their family recipes handed down over the generations at London’s foodie markets, but have now graduated to an actual restaurant, too. If you can call it that: they don’t so much have an open kitchen as a kitchen with a few tables huddled around it, so you can watch as spices are tempered in seething oil and chaats are assembled moments before serving. The methi na thepla – little flatbreads honking with leafy fenugreek that lives in my pores for days – are slapped out and hit the fryer minutes before they’re delivered to us by the beauteous Polly.

We have butteta vhada: potato formed into little balls in a gram flour coating, the seemingly pedestrian ingredients made thrilling by the addition of ginger and chilli, and a sultry tomato and curry leaf chutney. And a slightly fermented-tasting and porridgey chickpea khumni ne sev (often served at breakfast, unsurprisingly), which is far more engaging than its appearance would suggest.

I like these starters, or snacks, and the side dishes better than main courses, which can venture into amorphous brown stew territory. I’m thinking particularly of an aubergine, potato and pea number that looks like the kind of thing you resort to when using up the last of the veg box. But the red aduki bean dahl, oh lordy. It’s glorious: buttery, rich, each spice making its presence felt without shouting, slightly sweetened with jaggery. It’s a thing of humble but absolute luxury.

Every week there’s a different menu. You might find athanu: slices of fresh mango spiked with tingling spices into a kind of instant chutney. Or one of their insanely good bhujias: onion or broccoli, fried till crisp, the batter aerated with a fizz of bicarb. Or mhutia: crunchy wafers laced with ajwain (carom) seeds, like poppadoms with attitude.

The dishes’ names and ingredients are lyrical and thrillingly alien – vaal, farari chevro, ohndwo – and half the time you’ve no idea what they are; but you do know you’re going to be fighting over the last scraps. The prevalence of Jainism in Gujarat means that the state is mostly vegetarian (Rasoi is totally so, although it’s not the full satvika, avoiding onion and garlic, for which I’m eternally grateful). But rarely have I missed meat less. And, surprisingly for such a tiny outfit, they’re licensed, offering unusual, Indian-spiced cocktails and pleasing organic Sicilian wines decanted into stoppered bottles. Afterwards, even though we’ve scarfed virtually the whole menu, we feel energised and frisky, up for hitting Dalston’s moody cocktail establishments. Yah boo sucks to post-curry torpor.

To say that Gujarati Rasoi is no frills is restrained understatement. Decor runs to chipboard and concrete with a few flourishes of ornate fabric bunting for levity. If you sit too near the kitchen (and, even with their recent colonisation of the next-door space, it’s hard not to), you can fry every bit as thoroughly as the thepla. But you get the very real sense that you’re enjoying the hospitality of talented Gujarati home cooks, without needing to be invited into actual Gujarati homes. Which is a privilege I’m happy to cross town for.

Obama says ‘concerned’ about Los Angeles airport shooting [ Bus1nessN3wz ]

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama said on Friday that he is concerned about a shooting at the Los Angeles International Airport on Friday that killed one person and wounded at least six other people.

“We’re concerned about it, but I’ll let law enforcement folks talk about it directly,” Obama told reporters in the Oval Office after meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.
